SubBass Academy was formed way back in 2001 by DJ and music producer Graeme Lloyd. Initially part of Dance Trax records in Shoreditch SubBass quickly grow into its own entity and moved to its early base in Limehouse. SubBass was the first DJ School to actively work with the clubbing industry and found success working alongside clubbing brands like Heat UK (original SW4 promoters) placing freshly trained DJs into events to play alongside pro DJs.
After relocating to Farringdon in 2005, SubBass continued to develop this unique selling point of training DJs and working with clubs and promoters to give new DJs a chance to play in some of the world’s top clubs, like London venues, The Cross, Pacha, The End and the legendary Turnmills night club which was located a stone’s throw from the SubBass studio. The relationship with London super club Turnmills and their Gallery night would prove fruitful for years to come.
The Gallery Partnership started with a Thursday night DJ competition where SubBass students would play to win the chance to warm up for super star DJs in the main room including Tall Paul, Sister Bliss (Faithless) The Chemical Brothers, Pete Tong and loads more. Simply no where else offered this opportunity and SubBass and The Gallery would continue this partnership over nearly 15 years as The Gallery moved to Ministry of Sound. SubBass DJS would play at Ministry of sound every month with SubBass hosting events in different rooms including the 103 giving students the opportunity to play to a packed crowd. SubBass also teamed up with SW4 festival as well as Ibiza clubs’ space, Amnesia and Bora Bora where students got the chance to play. Other schools copied this exact formula, but SubBass is proud to have created a way for DJs to move from the bedroom into the main room.
From 2014 to 2020 SubBass was based in our final home a large purpose-built music production and DJ studio in Westminster and some massively talented DJs and music producers came through our door including the likes of Jess Bays (Defected) and Radio One DJ Arielle Free.
Now the future of SubBass Academy is online moving in a new direction teaching students from all over the world with our Live 121 online classes and online tutorial based music production courses.
